Resource for Visual Literacy

Below is a video made to enhance your understanding of poetry and, help you visualise and understand the effect of figurative language.

The poems chosen for this analysis are 'The Slave's Dream' and ' Aftermath'. The video names some of the poetic techniques used by the poet while also linking images to imagery. I also read the poem out loud to enhance your understanding.

By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
  • Visualise figurative language and;
  • Explain how written imagery can be demonstrated by a visual image
  • Understand the effect visual imagery has on the responder
  • Use technology to demonstrate and express written language visually.

ACTIVITY: In pairs choose a poem from our anthology. Think about the images that the poem conveys and make a powerpoint linking the images to the words as seen in the video above.
